Newport Business Association launches ‘Think Local’ campaign

When it comes to shopping for goods and services, there’s no place like home.

That’s the message Newport Business Association (NBA) wants to spread in a bid to help local businesses and retailers survive the recession.

It is launching a ‘think local’ campaign, to encourage consumers and local businesses to come together and support each other during the economic downturn.  The ‘Think Local + Buy Local = Be Local’ campaign aims to inform the public about the strong economic, environmental and social benefits of buying locally and to encourage them to ‘think local’ wherever possible.

NBA founder, Jeremy Rose said:  “There is a fantastic variety of shops and businesses on offer in Saffron Walden, Newport and surrounding villages, but they face a very serious threat from the recession.  We could potentially see some of our best businesses close and lose the shops and services we take for granted.”

“NBA wants to encourage people to take pride in being local and to feel part of the community through supporting their local businesses and retailers wherever possible.  Whether they’re buying a new washing machine, doing a grocery shop, having their home improved or needing the services of a solicitor, we want to persuade people to think locally first so that together we can protect our community from the worst effects of these difficult times.”

The campaign, which has its own distinctive branding and logo will be launched officially at the NBA’s February, 26th meeting, held at the Coach and Horses Newport by Lord Hanningfield, Leader of Essex County Council.  He said:  “‘We recognise the critical role the economy plays in sustaining society and promoting well being. In launching the ‘Think Local’ campaign, Newport Business Association is taking positive steps to encourage residents and businesses to think about local jobs and services.

"The individual has a role to play in their local area. By supporting local businesses through the ‘Think, Buy and be Local’ campaign, residents can contribute to the local economy and ultimately benefit from a vibrant, thriving community.

"Our county offers great opportunities to local, national and international enterprises. Through the hard work and entrepreneurial spirit of local businesses, we’ll make Essex and hence Newport, one of the best places to come to for business."

To help kick-start the campaign NBA has created an online directory containing the details of participating local shops and businesses. You can find out more, pledge your support for the campaign and obtain a free window/car sticker by visiting downloading the ‘Think Local + Buy Local = Be Local’ logo. “So far we have received the support of 160 local businesses, but we need more to come forward to help promote awareness of the scheme.  Registering with the campaign is a free and easy way to promote your business during these difficult economic times,”  said Jeremy.
